Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are the perfect product to pair with log and timber frame homes because of their structural strength, large panel size, and high R-value. SIP manufacturing consists of structurally laminating a continuous core of expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation between two performance-rated oriented strand boards (OSB). The EPS is a rigid closed cell foam plastic filled with air. Because the EPS is pressed into sheets, it retains its shape, and does not settle. This means the R-value does not change or degrade over time. In addition, the sheets create a continuous core of EPS inside the SIP. Continuity like this reduces air leakage and heat loss by keeping the conditioned air inside the home. As a result, SIPs create homes that have high energy efficiency ratings and significantly lower energy costs.
