SIPs and Mountain-Style Homes: An Energy Efficient Solution

In a past article, we addressed questions about whether or not log homes are energy efficient. However, today’s energy codes are becoming more stringent, and energy costs are rising. In response to this reality, potential homeowners sometimes ask us how we increase the energy efficiency of our log and timber homes.

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are the perfect product to pair with log and timber frame homes because of their structural strength, large panel size, and high R-value. SIP manufacturing consists of structurally laminating a continuous core of expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation between two performance-rated oriented strand boards (OSB). The EPS is a rigid closed cell foam plastic filled with air. Because the EPS is pressed into sheets, it retains its shape, and does not settle. This means the R-value does not change or degrade over time. In addition, the sheets create a continuous core of EPS inside the SIP. Continuity like this reduces air leakage and heat loss by keeping the conditioned air inside the home. As a result, SIPs create homes that have high energy efficiency ratings and significantly lower energy costs.

Partnership with Insulspan®

PrecisionCraft Log & Timber Homes uses SIP wall and roof panels manufactured by its sister company, Insulspan. This partnership offers many benefits to you.

First, as part of your home’s construction documents, the designers at M-T-N Design, the in-house design firm at PrecisionCraft, create manufacturing specifications for Insulspan. Because of their familiarity with the product, you can rest assured that the specifications meet Insulspan’s requirements. This saves time and money during the manufacturing stage.

Second, your PrecisionCraft project manager coordinates the shipment of the SIPs, and logs and timbers with your build site’s readiness. The partnership between PrecisionCraft and Insulspan makes this coordination easier. In addition, depending on where crafting takes place for your home’s timbers, the SIPs and timbers may be shipped on the same truck. These elements create time and cost savings.

You discover the final advantage of this partnership when the SIPs, logs, and timbers flawlessly integrate with one another during installation. Watch the easy construction of your home, knowing the products’ designs work together, and enjoy peace of mind.
